The arrest stemmed from a complaint made to Port Chester Police by the John F. Kennedy Elementary School administration detailing that an unknown man had been approaching schoolchildren on Olivia Street.
The department then investigated this complaint and began surveilling the area. They soon saw a man approach a child, engage in small talk with her, and offer to walk with her, according to police.
The girl then continued on her way to school and ignored the man, eventually reporting the incident to school authorities once she arrived.
Officers were then able to find the man and take him into custody before charging him with first-degree endangering the welfare of a child. The name and image of the suspect, who lives in Port Chester, was not released by authorities.
The department added that this behavior had occurred numerous times over the past few weeks, and said that the suspect's arrest was a result of "the partnership we have with the administrators of the schools working towards a common goal."
The families of any other children who came into contact with the suspect or a red sports utility vehicle are asked to call police at 914-939-6332.
